Blue Jeans Frog
This actually a color morph of the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog. Not one to lick. You can see the blue jeans on a pic somewhere below.

Boat Billed Heron
Are you taking my picture?
BoatBilledHeroncosta rica june 2014
At I think they are Caimans. They look like baby dragons with that plate on their heads,
Caimanbabiescosta rica june 2014
Taking in the sun.
Other Heron's look similar to each other, they vary in color and size, but these are very different. They strike expressive poses. This one looks at me with complete disdain.
These things are everywhere. They can turn their ankles more than 180 degrees so they can go down a tree head first.

Road Side Hawk
So we were going down the road and I asked what is that bird? Carlos says " it's a Road Side Hawk.". I thought he just didn't know what it was, but that's what it is.

Just uses his tail for balance, can't wrap it around anything,
Blue Gray Tanager
I don't see any gray. It ought to be the Baby Blue Tanager.

Scaly Breasted Hummingibird.
Not the most glamorous Hummingbird, but he made up for it by perching on the flower.

White Collared Mankin
His wing feathers are bowed and thick, he makes a snapping noise with them, it sounded like firecrackers.

Brown Throated Sloth
Body hair grows away from his legs and toward his back because he hangs upside down and it keeps the rain out.
BrownThroatedSlothcosta rica june 2014
You can see the jeans on this one.
Barred Antshrike (male)
They don't eat ants, they just follow them around, and when the ant stirs up a bug they go for it.
BarredAntshrikemalecosta rica june 2014
Barred Anshrike (female)
The ants flushed a nice fat creepy crawly for her.
BarredAntshrikefemalecosta rica june 2014
That's what it is even though it isn't that green. They have a "3rd eye" on top of their head, just a patch with a crude retina, they can see light and movement from above with it. That blubber is for heat regulation.

See the snake on his upper wing? Could be a snake on his lower wing, but looks more like a mullet.

Wherever you find ants you find birds. The ants were directly below him.

They were a long way off and it was dark, the only monkeys we saw.

They eat snakes. His nostrils are supposed to look like that.

Green Crowned Brilliant Hummingbird
Has his tongue stuck out just wee bit. Unlike other Hummingbirds, this one almost always perches to feed.
GreenCrownedBrilliantHummingbirdcosta rica june 2014
During mating season, 10 or so males will gather in a group called a lek, and sing to the females, the females gather round and pick the crooner that makes them swoon for a mate,

Violet Sabrewing in Flight
Very non agressive for a Hummingbird, but they can get rowdy around a feeder.

Red Legged Honey Creeper
A strong wind was blowing and it was pouring down rain
White Bellied Mountain-Gem
Or the White-Bellied Mountaingem, they don't agree on what to call it or even what kind of Hummingbird it is. Pretty bird anyway,

Stripped Green Palm Viper
We were met by this coming around a corner in the trail. This is supposed to be a tree snake.
I think this is a young bird he doesn't seem to have the tail racquet you see on the one below and no chest marking yet.
BluecrownedMotmotcosta rica june 2014
Looks like a flying Shrimp to me.
HummingbirdMothcosta rica june 2014
Poor photo but you can see the racquet, The feather barbs are loosely attached and they just fall out leaving the racquet

Cock of the roof.
Crested Guan (female)
Easy shoot, right off the balcony of my room.
Crested Guan (male)
I chased this bird all over the place for a picture, I fell and twisted my ankle, looking up in the trees instead of where I was going,
This one was on the ceiling of the bathroom, doing a good job.
They were both giving me the "stink eye".
ScarletmcCawcosta rica june 2014
They live in horizontal tunnels on the riverbank and lay their eggs on a layer of fish bones and scales. He does have feet under there,
Those are feathers on the side, not bare spots.

He drove all the other birds off from the fruit tree. Local birders don't really like these hooligans,
These Honey Creepers managed to sneak in for some Watermelon,
